Nonhuman Primate Enrichment Workshop: Best Practices for Welfare

This 8 hour workshop will be held immediately prior to the annual meeting of the American Society of Primatologists. This workshop will include 8 hours of instruction, presentations, discussion, and small group work focused on best practices for providing enrichment to nonhuman primates. Participants will gain an understanding of the importance of providing appropriate enrichment, strategies for designing and evaluating enrichment programs, and how stakeholders (e.g., veterinarians, animal husbandry, researchers, behavioral staff) can work together to implement effective environmental enrichment plans. Topics to be covered include enrichment overview and applications, design considerations, veterinary perspectives for enrichment applications, new enrichment technology, and progressively challenging enrichment. The workshop will include situational problem solving and small group activities. This workshop is designed for those working with primates in the zoo, sanctuary and research environments including caregivers and keepers; behavior management specialists; veterinarians; veterinary technicians; curators and supervisors; research personnel.
